Welcome to the San Carlos School District SMART-E Preschool Program. We offer a developmental, play-based, multi-sensory learning environment, with multi-age groupings for children aged three (by September 1st) through five years. We currently have four programs: full day (7:30am – 5:30pm) and morning (9am – 12pm). We have a full day class at Heather Elementary School, White Oaks Elementary School and two at Brittan Acres Elementary School. Our morning class is located at Heather Elementary School. We are open Monday through Friday. Our school is open to children residing within the San Carlos School District boundary and the surrounding community (with priority placement given to SCSD families).
San Carlos School District Preschool is built on the principle that children learn best through play! In our rich, developmentally appropriate environment, positive self-identities and proactive communication skills develop through hands-on experiences. As children engage in multi-sensory activities they are involved in experiences which build awareness of varied viewpoints. Children are encouraged to explore, invent, and discover ways to create their own unique understanding of the world. We also value family traditions and family involvement in the ongoing education of young children. We believe in building a strong community through mutual respect, cooperation, understanding, and open communication.
DEVELOPMENTALLY APPROPRIATE PRACTICE
We follow Developmentally Appropriate Practice, which is a guideline for educators designed by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). It is a guideline for maintaining a high quality program. The basics of these guidelines are as follows:
- Curriculum is based on knowledge of how children learn.
- Activities and learning experiences reflect concepts and ideas that are relevant to the child’s world.
- Teachers understand the sequence of development, and that children develop at their own, unique rate.
- Individual and cultural variation is celebrated.
- Teachers provide many opportunities for children to work in small groups to practice problem solving.
- Teachers provide opportunities for children to choose their own activities from varied learning areas based on program goals and information teachers have collected about each child.

Jill Davino – Teacher Heather Preschool
I have worked with children since 1992. I began teaching in the year 2000. I came to Brittan Acres after 14 years of teaching in Burlingame. I began substituting last year for the San Carlos School District and then became a part of their team permanently in June 2015. I graduated from Cal State University, Hayward in 1994 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Therapeutic Recreation (working with people with developmental disabilities). I went back to school to study Early Childhood Education. My philosophy is that each child has their own learning style and when it is assessed, the teacher will help them succeed. Effective learning requires communication between teacher, student, and parents. Learning thrives in a positive, safe environment. I am happily married with three children. I have one daughter, 24, and two sons, 22 and 17.
